What E24 actually means
The dishwasher can't get the dirty water out, and the most common reason is blocked filters.
Bosch machines check that the water level drops when the drain pump runs. If it doesn't fall as expected, the cycle halts and E24 comes up, usually with water still sitting in the bottom of the tub. It is the milder of the two drain codes ainain path it points at a restriction rather than a dead pump E25 is the one that more often means the pump itself is blocked or failing.
What E24 looks like on a Bosch dishwasher
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Bosch dishwasher, E24 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Dishwasher not draining
- Water left in the tub at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
- Standing water in the bottom
- Not filling with water
- No water going in
- Takes for ever to fill
- Stops right at the start of the cycle
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Blocked or greasy filters in the base of the tub
- Food debris or broken glass caught in the drain pump
- Kinked or trapped drain hose behind the machine
- Blocked sink waste spigot or trap where the hose connects
- Drain hose pushed too far into the waste pipe
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power back on and try a rinse cycle.
- Lift out the filter assembly at the bottom of the tub, rinse it under a hot tap and clear the mesh of food and grease before refitting it firmly.
- Scoop out any standing water so you can see the filter area properly.
- Check the drain hose at the back is not kinked, crushed against the wall or trapped by the machine.
- If the hose runs into a sink waste, check that waste and trap for a blockage a blocked kitchen sink will stop the dishwasher draining too.
- Run a hot cycle with a dishwasher cleaner if the filters were heavily greasy.
