Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E80 actually means

The machine can't get the door properly shut and locked, so it won't start or won't let you back in.

E80 on Bosch machines is the door interlock group of faults \ E80-31 means the door is reading as open, E80-10 means it tried to lock and couldn't, and E80-20 means it locked but can't release. The control board checks the interlock before it will admit water, so it halts there rather than risk running with an unsecured door.

What usually causes it

 • Door not pushed firmly enough to catch on the hook
 • Failed door interlock (the most common finding on these)
 • Bent or sticking door hook / catch
 • Stiff or displaced door seal holding the door off the catch
 • Wiring or control board fault in the lock circuit

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

 1. Push the door shut firmly until you hear it click, then try again — a soft close is often all it is.
 2. Check nothing is trapped in the door — a sleeve, towel corner or duvet edge stops it latching.
 3. Wipe round the rubber seal and the metal catch area; grime and detergent residue can stop the hook seating.
 4. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on — this clears a stuck lock reading and often releases a door that won't open.
 5. If the drum is full of water and the door stays shut, run a drain or spin programme before trying the door again.
