Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E62 actually means

The dryer has found a fault in the circuit that switches the heater on and off, so it has shut the heating down.

E62 is one of the E60-series heat faults. The control board switches the heating unit through a relay; when it repeatedly cannot get the heater to power up and behave as expected, it cuts the supply to the heating unit and logs the fault. After a few failed attempts to re-power it the machine stops with E62, so you get a cycle that tumbles cold, or a cycle that stops part way with clothes still damp.

What E62 looks like on a General tumble dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a General tumble dryer, E62 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Not drying
  • Blowing cold air
  • Clothes still damp at the end

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Faulty power relay for the heating unit on the control board
  • Failed heating unit
  • Damaged or loose wiring to the heater or thermostats
  • Main control board fault
  • Heat-related fault following recent work on the machine, where a heater or thermostat wire has been left off or on the wrong terminal

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and start a short cycle to see whether the code returns straight away
  2. Clean the door filter and, if your model has one, the condenser filter — heavy lint restricts airflow and puts the heating system under stress
  3. Check the vent hose, if fitted, is not kinked or crushed behind the machine

Which General models show E62

E62 means the same thing on this model. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
