Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E25 actually means

The dishwasher can't pump the dirty water away, so it has stopped rather than carry on with a bowl full of water.

E25 comes up when the machine tries to drain and the drain pump either can't turn or can't shift the water. On Bosch-built machines like Neff, it usually appears at the end of a cycle or partway through, with water still sitting in the bottom. The control board sees the water isn't going anywhere and halts the programme.

What E25 looks like on a Neff dishwasher

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Neff dishwasher, E25 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Dishwasher not draining
  • Water left in the tub at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water
  • Standing water in the bottom
  • Not filling with water
  • No water going in
  • Takes for ever to fill
  • Stops right at the start of the cycle

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • A fragment of broken glass or chipped china jamming the pump impeller
  • Blocked filters letting debris reach the pump
  • The waste hose kinked or trapped behind the machine
  • A clogged sink waste spigot — often greased up, or blocked at the plastic cross inside it
  • A drain pump that has failed or only runs intermittently

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Switch off at the socket for a minute, then power back up and try a short programme — this clears the code if the drain has freed itself
  2. Lift out the filter assembly, rinse it under the tap and clear anything caught in the mesh. When you refit it, twist it until the blue arrows line up so it locks — a filter that isn't locked lets glass and grit straight into the pump
  3. Bail out standing water with a jug and a sponge so you can see what's in the sump
  4. Pull the machine forward gently and check the waste hose isn't kinked or squashed against the wall — a hose that was crushed when the machine was pushed back drains worse and worse until E25 starts
  5. If your dishwasher drains into the sink waste, check that connection isn't blocked with fat or food

Common questions about Neff E25

What does E25 mean on a Neff dishwasher?

Can I fix Neff E25 myself?

There are 5 checks you can safely do yourself first.

  1. Switch off at the socket for a minute, then power back up and try a short programme — this clears the code if the drain has freed itself.
  2. Lift out the filter assembly, rinse it under the tap and clear anything caught in the mesh. When you refit it, twist it until the blue arrows line up so it locks — a filter that isn't locked lets glass and grit straight into the pump.
  3. Bail out standing water with a jug and a sponge so you can see what's in the sump.
  4. Pull the machine forward gently and check the waste hose isn't kinked or squashed against the wall — a hose that was crushed when the machine was pushed back drains worse and worse until E25 starts.
  5. If your dishwasher drains into the sink waste, check that connection isn't blocked with fat or food.

This sometimes clears with those checks. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly.
