What is actually happening
The turntable sits on a roller ring and is driven by a small motor underneath the floor of the cavity. Most of the time the fault is not the motor at all — the coupler that engages the plate has cracked, or the plate is simply not seated on it. Both are worth checking before anyone is called out, because they cost nothing to put right.
The usual causes
- The glass plate not seated properly on the drive coupler
- A cracked or worn drive coupler
- A roller ring that has lost a wheel or is clogged with food debris
- A failed turntable motor
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything past this point — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the appliance plugged in.
- Take the plate and roller ring out, wash both, and refit the plate making sure it engages the coupler
- Turn the coupler by hand to check it is not cracked or spinning loose
- If the plate now turns, nothing further is needed
