What E61 actually means
The machine has run its heating stage for the maximum time allowed without the load getting hot enough, so it has paused the cycle.
The control board watches the temperature sensor while the heater is on. If the expected temperature is never reached within the time limit, it assumes the heating circuit isn't doing its job and halts rather than running on indefinitely. You'll usually notice it as clothes coming out damp or cold on a drying programme, with the cycle stopping part way through.
What E61 looks like on a AEG washer dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a AEG washer dryer, E61 usually shows up as one or more of these:

- Standing water in the bottom

What usually causes it
- Failed heating element in the drying circuit
- Temperature (NTC) sensor out of position or reading wrongly
- Airflow choked with fluff \u2014 filters or the vent path blocked, so heat never builds
- Damaged or loose wiring to the heater
- Faulty main electronic board (the least common of the four)
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Clean the lint filter and its housing thoroughly \u2014 a matted filter is the most common airflow problem behind poor heating.
- If your model has a condenser unit accessible from the front, rinse it out and refit it properly.
- Clear the drain filter at the bottom. On some washer dryers the drying stage relies on the pump running, and a blocked filter can stall the whole thing.
- Check the drain hose isn't kinked or pushed too far into the standpipe.
- Don't overload the drum \u2014 a packed drum can't move air, and drying times run long.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then restart a drying programme to see if the code returns.
