What E04 actually means
The dishwasher thinks water has escaped into its base and has shut itself down to avoid a flood.

What E04 looks like on a Cookology dishwasher

What usually causes it
- A genuine leak from a hose, pump seal or the tub letting water into the base
- The machine having been tilted or carried while still holding water, which sloshes into the base and lifts the float
- A filter not seated properly, letting debris into the water system and causing overflow
- The float or anti-flood switch stuck up, or failed, giving a false reading
- A door seal leaking so water escapes down the front and collects underneath
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn it off at the socket for a minute, then power back up \u2014 if the base was only briefly wet, the code can clear
- Stand the dishwasher on a firm, level surface and avoid tipping or carrying it while there is any water inside
- Check the filter in the base of the tub is clean and clicked fully into place before the next cycle
- Look around and under the machine for damp or a puddle \u2014 if you find water, leave it unplugged and unused
- Make sure the drain hose is not kinked or pushed too far into the sink waste
