What F18 actually means
The machine's main control board can no longer read its own stored settings or talk properly to the display, so it has stopped rather than carry on blind.
F18 on an Indesit washer dryer is an internal data or communication fault — the electronic control has failed a check on the information it holds, or lost reliable contact with the display board. The usual giveaway is that some or all of the display stops working: missing segments, a dead panel, or buttons that no longer register. Because the board can't trust its own data, it won't start or continue a cycle.
What F18 looks like on a Indesit washer dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Indesit washer dryer, F18 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- No function at all
- Dead — nothing lights up
- Lights flashing and nothing happening
- Programme won't start
- Machine tripping the electrics
- F18 flashing on the display
- Beeping and showing F18
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- A corrupted or failed memory chip on the main control board
- A loose or damaged ribbon/connector cable between the control board and the display panel
- A display (user interface) board that has failed
- A control board that has been replaced without being programmed for the model
- Power surge or spike damage to the electronics
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Switch the machine off at the wall socket, leave it for a minute or two, then switch back on — an isolated data glitch will sometimes clear
- Check the plug and socket are sound and the machine isn't running through an extension lead or damaged plug
- Note exactly what the display does or doesn't show — which segments or lights are dead — as it helps the engineer pin down board versus display
