What DE actually means
The machine can't confirm the door is shut and locked, so it won't start the cycle.
Before filling or heating, a Samsung washer dryer waits for the door interlock to latch and pass power through to the rest of the machine. If that confirmation doesn't arrive within the time the control board allows, it stops and shows DE. On the machines we attend the door is usually visibly closed \u2014 it's the lock itself that has stopped signalling.
What DE looks like on a Samsung washer dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Samsung washer dryer, DE usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- Not filling with water
- No water going in
- Takes for ever to fill

What usually causes it
- Door not fully latched, or something caught in the seal stopping it closing
- Worn or broken door handle or latch, so it no longer pushes far enough into the lock
- Failed door interlock \u2014 by far the most common finding
- Burnt or loose connections on the wiring at the door lock
- Child lock feature switched on
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Open the door and close it again firmly \u2014 listen for the latch clicking home
- Check nothing is trapped in the seal, and no laundry is poking out of the drum
- Look at the handle and latch for obvious cracks or play; if the door feels loose or floppy when shut, that's your answer
- Check whether the child lock is switched on and turn it off if so
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try the cycle again
