What is actually happening
The dispenser runs from the mains through a filter, a valve and a small reservoir inside the fridge. A trickle usually means the filter is overdue or the supply is restricted; nothing at all usually means the valve, the supply, or a frozen line where the water sits closest to the freezer side. The ice maker often stops at the same time, which is a useful clue that the fault is upstream of both.
The usual causes
- A water filter overdue for replacement, restricting flow
- A frozen supply line in the door or at the reservoir
- A failed inlet valve, or the supply tap turned off
- A kinked supply pipe behind the appliance
- A dispenser switch or control fault
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything past this point — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the appliance plugged in.
- Change the water filter if it is more than six months old — this fixes a good share of these
- Check the supply tap behind the appliance is on and the pipe is not kinked
- If the ice maker has stopped too, that points at the supply rather than the dispenser

Common questions
Why is my American fridge freezer water dispenser not working?
Nothing comes out when the dispenser lever is pressed, or it trickles.
Can I fix a American fridge freezer water dispenser not working myself?
Change the water filter if it is more than six months old — this fixes a good share of these. Check the supply tap behind the appliance is on and the pipe is not kinked. If the ice maker has stopped too, that points at the supply rather than the dispenser. Those checks fix it more often than not. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly.
