What is actually happening
A fridge produces condensation by design, and it is meant to run down the back wall, into a small drain hole, and out to a tray on top of the compressor where it evaporates. Water inside almost always means that drain hole has blocked with food debris or ice — which is a genuinely fixable job without an engineer in most cases.
The usual causes
- A blocked defrost drain hole at the back of the fridge compartment
- A door seal letting warm air in and creating excess condensation
- A cracked or displaced drip tray at the back
- A blocked or split water supply pipe on plumbed models
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything past this point — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the appliance plugged in.
- Find the small drain hole in the middle at the back of the fridge floor and clear it gently — a cotton bud or a length of soft wire will usually do it
- Wipe the seals and check they close cleanly
- Check the tray on top of the compressor at the back is in place and not cracked
