What is actually happening
Dryer noise is usually mechanical and usually gets worse rather than better. Squealing points at the drum support rollers or the belt tensioner; a rumble points at bearings; a scrape or rattle is often something as simple as a coin that has worked its way out of a pocket and into the drum casing.
The usual causes
- Worn drum support rollers or jockey wheel
- A worn drum bearing at the rear
- A coin, button or hair grip loose inside the drum casing
- A worn or perished drive belt
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything past this point — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the appliance plugged in.
- Run it empty and listen — a noise with an empty drum is mechanical rather than the load
- Check the drum seam and the filter housing for coins and hair grips
- Note whether the noise rises and falls with the drum turning
