What is actually happening

Dryers have more interlocks than most appliances, and each of them will silently refuse to run: the door must be properly latched, the water container must be emptied on condenser models, and the thermal cut-out must not have tripped. Most no-start faults turn out to be one of those rather than anything failed.

The usual causes

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything past this point — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the appliance plugged in.

  1. Empty the water container, even if it does not look full
  2. Push the door until it latches firmly
  3. Check the plug fuse and the breaker
  4. Clean the filter and condenser — a cut-out that has tripped once will trip again if the airflow is still blocked

Still will not start?

If the checks above have not sorted it, it needs looking at properly. £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it, or £84 in total including VAT if it is put right on the visit and no parts are needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Common questions

Why is my tumble dryer will not start?

Nothing happens when you press start, or the dryer stops as soon as it begins. Can I fix a tumble dryer will not start myself?

Empty the water container, even if it does not look full. Push the door until it latches firmly. Check the plug fuse and the breaker. Clean the filter and condenser — a cut-out that has tripped once will trip again if the airflow is still blocked. Those checks fix it more often than not. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly.
