What is actually happening
A machine that stalls is usually waiting for something it never gets: enough water, a temperature it cannot reach, or an empty drum it cannot achieve. The stage it stops at is the clue — stalling early is a fill problem, stalling in the middle is usually heating, and stalling at the end is drain or spin.
The usual causes
- A heating fault, so the cycle waits forever for a temperature it never reaches
- A fill fault, so it never gets enough water to proceed
- A drain fault at the end of the wash
- A control board or program selector fault
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything past this point — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the appliance plugged in.
- Note the point it stalls at and the time remaining shown — that alone narrows it down
- Run a rinse-and-spin only: if that completes, the fault is in the wash or heat stage
- Power off at the wall for ten minutes to clear a hung program
