What E01 actually means
The machine can't confirm the door is shut and locked, so it won't start or it has stopped mid-cycle.
Before filling with water, the washer locks the door and waits for the lock to confirm it's engaged. E01 means either that confirmation never arrived, or the lock released partway through a programme. As a safety measure the machine halts rather than run with a door it can't trust.
What usually causes it
- Door not pushed firmly enough to catch
- Laundry caught in the seal stopping the door closing flush
- Worn or broken door catch or striker
- Faulty door interlock that no longer confirms it's locked
- Wiring or control board fault at the lock
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Open the door and close it again firmly until you hear it click
- Check no clothing is trapped between the door and the rubber seal
- Reduce an overfilled drum so nothing presses against the door
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart
- Look at the door handle and catch for anything obviously bent, loose or broken
