What F09 actually means

The machine's control board has lost or rejected its own configuration settings, so it doesn't know what model it's fitted to and refuses to run a programme.

Every Ariston washer dryer control board is set up at the factory with data telling it which drum, motor, spin speed and drying parts it is driving. When that stored data is missing, corrupted or doesn't match the board fitted, the machine flags F09 — The fault calls it a setup error or an incompatible EEPROM. The usual sign is a dead-looking machine with several lights flashing at once, or a display lit but no programme selectable, and it will not start a cycle at all.

What F09 looks like on a Ariston washer dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Ariston washer dryer, F09 usually shows up as one or more of these:

• Drum not turning
• Won't spin
• Hums or buzzes but nothing moves
• Turns one way only
• No function at all
• Dead — nothing lights up
• Lights flashing and nothing happening
• Programme won't start

What usually causes it

• Configuration data on the main control board has become corrupted
• A replacement control board fitted without being programmed to the model
• Mismatched board and display electronics after a previous repair
• A power surge or supply interruption that scrambled the stored settings
• Failure of the memory chip on the main board itself

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

1. Switch the machine off at the wall socket, leave it for a minute, then switch back on — occasionally clears a one-off glitch
2. Check the mains socket and any extension lead are sound, as unstable supply can bring this on
3. Try selecting a programme after the reset; if the lights still flash together, the board has not recovered
