What F17 actually means

The machine can't confirm the door is locked, so it won't start or carry on with the cycle.

Before any Ariston washer dryer will fill or turn the drum, the door interlock has to report back to the control board that it is shut and latched. F17 means that confirmation never arrived — either the door genuinely isn't latched, or the interlock itself has failed to engage or is no longer signalling correctly. The cycle stops where it is, and on a part-filled machine the door will normally stay locked until the water level drops.

What F17 looks like on a Ariston washer dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Ariston washer dryer, F17 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Not filling with water
  • No water going in
  • Takes for ever to fill

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Door not pushed fully home, so the catch hasn't engaged
  • Laundry caught in the door seal or an overpacked drum pushing the door open
  • Worn or broken door catch and hinge, so the door sits slightly out of line
  • Failed door interlock (the electrical lock behind the door frame)
  • Wiring or control board fault that stops the interlock signal reaching the board

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Open the door, tuck any washing back inside the seal, and push the door shut firmly until you hear it latch — pressing at the catch side rather than near the hinge
  2. Take out a few items if the drum is packed tight and try again
  3. Look at how the door sits when closed — an obvious drop or gap at the catch points to worn hinges or a broken catch
  4. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart the programme
