What E17 actually means
The machine has not taken in enough water in the time it expects, so it has stopped rather than run a cycle dry.
On older Bosch machines (broadly those built before 2010) the control board times how long the drum takes to reach the right water level at the start of a cycle. If the water hasn't arrived within that window, it halts and shows this code — usually right at the beginning, before any real drum movement. On later Bosch, Siemens and Neff machines the same physical fault appears as E30-10, so the causes we find behind it are identical.
What E17 looks like on a Bosch washer dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Bosch washer dryer, E17 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- Not filling with water
- No water going in
- Takes for ever to fill

What usually causes it
- Water supply tap turned off or only partly open
- Inlet hose kinked, trapped or crushed behind the machine
- Blocked filter mesh in the inlet valve or hose connection
- Faulty water inlet valve that isn't opening
- Pressure system or control board misreading the water level
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Check the cold tap feeding the machine is fully open — and that nobody has turned it off after a previous leak.
- Pull the machine forward carefully and look along the fill hose for kinks or a crushed section where it meets the wall.
- Run the kitchen tap to confirm you actually have normal mains pressure in the house.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, switch back on and restart the programme — this clears the code if the supply problem has been sorted.
- Close the door firmly; a cycle that never properly starts can look like a fill fault.
