What E60 actually means
The machine has tried to turn the drum, found it won't rotate freely, and shut down to protect the motor.
On these Bosch machines the control module watches whether the drum actually moves when the motor is driven. If the drum stays put, or turns much more stiffly than expected, the machine reports a locked rotor and stops rather than keep forcing it. You'll usually see it early in the wash or as it tries to build up to a spin, often with a full or part-full tub of water.
What usually causes it
- Laundry jammed between the drum and the tub, blocking rotation
- A stiff or roughly running drum \u2014 worn bearings
- A foreign object (coin, wire, bra hook) wedged behind the drum
- Motor or motor wiring fault
- Fault on the control and power module driving the motor
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try a short programme.
- Once the water has drained and the door releases, open it and check nothing is trapped between the drum and the rubber seal \u2014 a stray sock or underwire is a common culprit.
- With the machine off, turn the drum by hand. If it feels gritty, stiff or grinds, don't run it again.
- Take out a heavy or badly unbalanced load and try again with a smaller one.
