What E61 actually means

The machine can't confirm the door is shut and locked, so it won't start or fill.

On Bosch washing machines (and the Neff and Siemens versions built on the same platform), E61 sits in the same family as E01, F08, F16 and F34 — all door interlock faults. The control board energises the lock at the start of the cycle and waits to be told the door is secure; if that confirmation doesn't arrive, it stops there rather than risk filling with an unsecured door. You'll normally see it within seconds of pressing start, often with the drum still bone dry.

What usually causes it

Failed door interlock (the most common finding by far)
Door not fully pushed home, so the catch never engages
Worn or misaligned door catch or hinge dropping the door slightly
Damaged or loose wiring to the lock, or a loose plug on the lock itself
Control board fault — much rarer than people assume

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Open the door fully and close it again firmly until you hear it click, then start the cycle.
Check nothing is trapped in the seal or door edge — a sock or a fold of the rubber gasket is enough to hold the door a couple of millimetres out.
Look at how the door sits against the frame; if it has dropped and no longer lines up with the catch, that points to the hinge or catch.
Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on, to clear a one-off glitch.
If the door is locked shut with water inside, leave it — don't force it.
