What E01 actually means
The machine cannot confirm the door is locked shut, so it refuses to start or continue.
Hoover's control board checks the door safety lock before it will let water in or turn the drum. On this Candy-based platform E01 covers the door interlock and the drum braking arrangement, along with the wiring to them — if the board doesn't get the signal that the door is locked, the cycle halts, usually within the first few seconds of pressing Start. You'll often see the machine appear dead on the programme with the door still openable, or a load sitting in water because the cycle stopped before it got going.
What E01 looks like on a Hoover washer dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Hoover washer dryer, E01 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- No function at all
- Dead — nothing lights up
- Lights flashing and nothing happening

What usually causes it
- Door not fully latched — laundry or a duvet corner pushing the door open a fraction
- Worn or broken door catch, so the hook doesn't engage the lock
- Failed door interlock (the part that holds the door shut electrically)
- Damaged or chafed wiring to the door lock, common where the loom flexes near the hinge side
- Fault on the main control board, or on the drum braking circuit
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Open the door, push the load back from the edges and close it again firmly — you should hear it latch
- Check nothing is caught in the seal or trapped between door and frame
- Look at the door catch for obvious damage or slack when you push it closed
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try a fresh cycle
