What F06 actually means
The dryer isn't getting a proper "door closed" signal from the door lock, so it refuses to start.
F06 is the door lock fault on these Hotpoint dryers. The machine checks the door catch and lock circuit before it will run the drum or heater, and if that confirmation doesn't arrive it stops and shows the code. Typically the owner finds the door won't latch shut properly, or it latches but pressing start does nothing.
What usually causes it
- Door catch or striker worn so the door doesn't latch firmly
- Faulty door lock/interlock switch
- Door slightly out of alignment or dropped on its hinge
- Lint or debris built up around the catch
- Wiring or connection fault back to the control board
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Open and close the door firmly a few times and listen for a solid click
- Check nothing is caught in the door seal or catch area, and wipe out any lint
- Clear the lint filter and make sure the door shuts flush against it
- Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try starting again
