What F12 actually means
The dryer's main control board has flagged an internal electronic fault and shut the cycle down.
F12 on a Hotpoint dryer points at the electronic control board itself rather than a blocked filter or a jammed door. The board has run its own self-check, found something it doesn't like in its own circuitry or the signals reaching it, and stopped the programme rather than carry on heating and turning the drum. It is one of the few dryer codes where there is nothing in the airflow path for the owner to put right.
What usually causes it
- A genuine fault on the main control board
- Poor or corroded connections on the board's plugs
- Moisture or lint contamination inside the electronics housing
- A mains supply spike or interruption confusing the board
- A related sensor circuit dragging the board into a fault state
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the dryer off at the wall socket, leave it a minute, then switch back on and try a short cycle — occasionally the code was a one-off and clears
- Make sure the machine is plugged straight into a wall socket rather than an extension lead or timer plug
