What F12 actually means
The machine's control board and its display/selector unit have stopped talking to each other, so the washer won't start or respond properly.
On these Indesit machines the main control board and the display or button module communicate with each other constantly. When that link breaks down the machine flags an electronic control fault and refuses to run a programme — typically it appears dead or lights up but won't start, rather than failing partway through a wash. Because it's an internal electronics fault, there's nothing in the wash cycle itself to blame.
What usually causes it
- A loose or corroded connection between the control board and the display module
- A failed main control board (the usual outcome on this code)
- A faulty display or button panel module
- Damp or a power surge affecting the board's connections
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Switch off at the wall socket, leave it for a minute or two, then power it back up — a genuine one-off glitch can clear this way
- Check the machine is on a working socket and not on an extension lead or adaptor
- If it does restart, try a short programme to see whether the fault returns straight away
