What E05 actually means
The hob has got too hot inside and has shut the zone down to protect itself until it cools.
Montpellier's induction hobs monitor the temperature of the electronics under the glass, and E05 (shown as E5 in the manuals) is the over-temperature trip. The hob stops heating and will not restart until it has cooled; the manuals note that cooling continues running after you switch off, so it can be a few minutes before it clears. In most cases it is a one-off caused by heat building up faster than the hob can shed it, rather than a broken part.
What E05 looks like on a Montpellier hob
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Montpellier hob, E05 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Not heating up
- Takes ages to get to temperature
- Cuts out part way through cooking
- Noisy fan
- Not getting cold evenly
- Cuts out after a few minutes
- No function at all

What usually causes it
- Cooking on a high setting for a long stretch, or a pan boiled dry
- Ventilation under the hob blocked by the worktop cut-out, a drawer or stored items
- Warm air recirculating from an oven or appliance fitted directly beneath
- Cooling fan under the glass failing or clogged with dust and grease
- Fault on the control electronics or the temperature sensor itself
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the hob off and give it 15–20 minutes to cool completely, then try again
- Remove the pan and check the base is flat and sitting properly on the zone
- Clear anything stacked in the cupboard or drawer immediately below the hob so air can move
- Keep tea towels, chopping boards and packaging off the glass while cooking
- Wipe the glass and the vent slots clear of spills and grease once cool
- Switch off at the wall for a minute, then back on, to reset the display
