What E04 actually means
The hob has lost a sensible reading from one of its temperature sensors and has shut the zone down as a precaution.
An induction hob relies on temperature sensors under the glass to keep the coils and electronics within safe limits. When the control board sees a reading that is out of range or missing altogether, it cannot tell how hot things are getting, so it stops heating and shows the fault rather than run blind. What E04 looks like on a Rangemaster cooker hood

What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the hob off at the wall or isolating switch for a minute, then back on — if it was a one-off glitch the code may not return
- Let the hob cool completely before trying again; a genuine sensor fault will come back regardless of temperature
- Check nothing is stored tight underneath in the cupboard or drawer below, and that the ventilation gap left at installation is clear — induction electronics need airflow
- Wipe the glass so nothing hot, such as a pan left standing or spilled fat, is sitting over the affected zone
