Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What 3C actually means

The control board has lost proper feedback from the drum motor, so the machine stops rather than spin blind.

Samsung's 3C is a motor fault. The control board relies on a hall sensor to tell it how fast and in which direction the motor is turning; when those signals stop making sense, the wash halts. Typically the drum rocks or jerks a little, then the machine gives up mid-cycle, often as it tries to build up to a spin.

What 3C looks like on a Samsung washing machine

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Samsung washing machine, 3C usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Drum not turning
  • Won't spin
  • Hums or buzzes but nothing moves
  • Turns one way only
  • No function at all
  • Dead — nothing lights up
  • Lights flashing and nothing happening
  • Programme won't start

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Faulty hall sensor on the motor
  • A fault in the drive motor itself
  • Loose or damaged wiring between motor and control board
  • Main control board misreading the motor signals
  • Something jamming the drum so it cannot turn freely

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try a short cycle — it clears the odd one-off glitch.
  2. Take the load out and turn the drum by hand: it should spin freely with no grinding or catching. If it feels rough or noisy, note that for the engineer.
  3. Check nothing has slipped between the drum and the outer tub (coins, wire from a bra) that could be stopping it turning.
