Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What DE actually means

The machine can't confirm the door is shut and locked, so it won't start the cycle.

Before a Samsung washer takes on water it waits for the door interlock to latch and pass power through. If that confirmation doesn't arrive within the time the control board allows, it stops and shows DE. The door can look perfectly closed and the machine still believe it's open, because the signal from the lock is what counts, not the appearance.

What usually causes it

  • A failed door interlock — the most common cause by a distance
  • Worn or damaged door handle or latch, so the catch doesn't push in far enough
  • Washing bunched up in the door, holding it slightly open
  • Child lock feature switched on
  • Burnt or corroded connections at the lock (engineer job)

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Open the door and push it firmly shut until you hear it click and latch.
  2. Check no clothing, duvet corner or towel is trapped in the seal or door edge.
  3. Look at the handle and latch for obvious wear, cracks or play — if the handle feels loose or the latch doesn't spring back, that's your answer.
  4. Check whether child lock has been left on and switch it off if your model has it.
  5. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power up and try again.

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
