What E09 actually means
The machine has measured the mains voltage reaching it as either too low or too high, and has halted the cycle to protect itself.
Sharp's control board watches the incoming supply and expects it to sit between 170V and 260V. If it drops below or climbs above that window — even briefly — the cycle stops and E09 is shown rather than risking the motor, heaters and electronics. It is one of only a handful of codes on these machines that the manufacturer deliberately displays to the owner rather than hiding in the service test, because the cause is often outside the appliance.
What E09 looks like on a Sharp washer dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Sharp washer dryer, E09 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Not drying
- Blowing cold air
- Clothes still damp at the end
- Takes hours to dry
- Drum not turning
- Won't spin

What usually causes it
- A poor or overloaded socket, or an extension lead the machine is plugged into
- Genuine dips or spikes in the household supply, sometimes only when the heater or motor draws current
- A worn plug, socket or damaged mains lead giving a bad connection
- A fault on the control board's voltage sensing, so the supply is fine but the machine misreads it
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart the programme
- Make sure it is plugged directly into a wall socket, not an extension lead, adaptor or travel-style converter
- Try a different wall socket on a different circuit if the lead reaches safely
- Note whether other things in the house flicker or trip at the same moment — that points at the supply rather than the appliance
- Check the plug and lead are not hot, scorched or discoloured; if they are, leave it unplugged and get it looked at
