Sharp E14 washer dryer: what it means & what to check

What E14 actually means

The dryer half of the machine isn't producing any heat, so the control board has stopped the drying cycle.

During drying, a sensor in the dryer duct watches the air temperature. The fault calls E14 a dryer heater thermostat / heater fuse fault: the heater has been switched on but the temperature simply doesn't climb, so after a few minutes the board gives up and posts the code rather than tumbling wet washing indefinitely. These machines use two dryer heating elements, and a failure on either one will bring up the same code. Washing normally still works — it's the drying that stops.

What usually causes it

A blown thermal fuse or tripped safety thermostat on the dryer heater, usually after the airflow has been restricted by fluff
A failed dryer heating element (one of the two elements is enough to cause it)
The dryer temperature sensor (NTC) reading wrongly, so real heat isn't detected
A loose or burnt connector between the heater circuit and the main control board
Fitting the machine somewhere very cold or unventilated, which the service notes flag as a condition to check

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Clean the fluff/lint filter and, if your model has one, the condenser filter — restricted airflow is what trips these safety cut-outs in the first place
Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and try a short drying programme to see if the code returns straight away
Make sure the machine isn't crammed against a wall or shut in an unventilated cupboard, and that the room isn't freezing cold
Try a wash-only cycle — if that runs through normally, it confirms the fault is on the drying side
