What E01 actually means

The machine cannot lock the door, so it refuses to start filling or run.

Before any Sharp washer dryer takes water it locks the door and waits for confirmation that the lock has engaged. If that confirmation doesn't come back, the control board stops the cycle and shows E01 rather than risk running with an unsecured door. It's one of the handful of codes Sharp deliberately show to the owner, and it appears on the same terms across the ES range.

What E01 looks like on a Sharp washer dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Sharp washer dryer, E01 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Not filling with water
  • No water going in
  • Takes for ever to fill

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Door not pushed fully shut, or laundry trapped in the seal
  • Worn or sticking door catch that no longer engages
  • Failed door interlock (the part that locks and confirms)
  • Loose or damaged wiring to the interlock
  • Control board not reading the lock signal

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Open the door and close it again firmly — a lot of E01s are nothing more than a door that hasn't latched.
  2. Check nothing is caught in the seal or hanging out of the drum, and that the load isn't pressing against the door.
  3. Wipe the seal and the catch area — detergent residue and grit stop the latch seating.
  4. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and try a short programme.
  5. Have a look at the catch on the door itself: if it's visibly loose, cracked or bent, that's your answer and it needs replacing.

Which Sharp models show E01

E01 means the same thing on all 4 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
