Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E03 actually means

The machine can't get the water out of the drum, so it has stopped and flagged a drain pump fault.

Sharp lists E03 as a pump error, and it's one of the codes deliberately shown to the owner rather than hidden in service mode. The control board expects the water level to drop once the drain pump runs; when that doesn't happen, or the pump doesn't respond as expected, the cycle halts. You'll typically find it stuck mid-cycle or before the spin, with water still sitting in the drum and wet washing inside.

What E03 looks like on a Sharp washer dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Sharp washer dryer, E03 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine not draining
  • Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water
  • Standing water in the bottom
  • Not filling with water
  • No water going in
  • Takes for ever to fill
  • Stops right at the start of the cycle

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Blocked pump filter — coins, buttons, hair grips and lint are the usual culprits
  • Drain hose kinked, trapped behind the machine or pushed too far into the standpipe
  • Blockage in the standpipe or sink trap the hose empties into
  • Worn or seized drain pump, sometimes noisy or humming without pumping
  • Wiring or connection fault between the control board and the pump

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and try a spin or drain programme — a one-off sensing glitch will often clear.
  2. Clean the pump filter at the bottom front of the machine. Have a shallow tray and towels ready, as there will be standing water to come out.
  3. Check the drain hose behind the machine isn't kinked, crushed against the wall or squashed by the machine's own weight.
  4. Make sure the end of the hose isn't pushed too deep into the standpipe, which can siphon or block it.
  5. If it drains into a sink waste or trap, check that isn't blocked with grease — run the sink tap to confirm it clears.

Which Sharp models show E03

E03 means the same thing on all 4 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Common questions about Sharp E03

What does E03 mean on a Sharp washer dryer?

The machine can't get the water out of the drum, so it has stopped and flagged a drain pump fault. Sharp lists E03 as a pump error, and it's one of the codes deliberately shown to the owner rather than hidden in service mode. Can I fix Sharp E03 myself?

There are 5 checks you can safely do yourself first.

This sometimes clears with those checks. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly.
