Sharp E04 washer dryer: what it means & what to check

What E04 actually means

The machine has found more water in the drum than it should have, so it has switched to draining to stop a flood.

Sharp washer dryers monitor the water level with a pressure sensor, and if the level goes above what the programme expects, the overflow routine takes over: the machine keeps pumping out and shows E04 instead of carrying on with the wash. It is a protective measure, not a fault with the drain itself — the usual cause is water continuing to enter when it should have stopped, typically a water inlet valve that no longer closes fully. On these models you will often see the machine pumping out repeatedly, or standing water that keeps coming back after a drain.

What E04 looks like on a Sharp washer dryer

What usually causes it

Inlet valve not shutting off, so the machine keeps filling
Pressure sensor or its hose reading the level wrongly
Blocked or split pressure hose inside the machine
Excess foam from too much detergent confusing the level reading
Control board misreading the water level signal

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and see whether the code returns on a fresh cycle.
Turn off the water tap at the wall — if water keeps trickling into the drum with the machine switched off, the inlet valve is passing and needs replacing.
Check you are not overdosing detergent, especially with non-machine or heavily foaming products; run a rinse-only cycle to clear excess foam.
Make sure the drain hose is not kinked or pushed too far down the standpipe, and clean the pump filter at the bottom of the machine if your model has one.
Check the machine is not sitting with the drain hose end below water level in a sink or standpipe, which can siphon water back in.
