What E16 actually means

The machine can't confirm the door is properly shut and locked, so it won't start the cycle.

Before a Siemens washer will fill or turn the drum, the door interlock has to tell the control board that the door is closed and latched. E16 means that confirmation never arrived — the machine either can't lock the door or can't detect that it has. It stops there rather than risk running with the door unsecured.

What usually causes it

Worn or failed door interlock (the most common finding by a long way)
The plastic pin or hook on the door not engaging the latch properly — often because the door has dropped slightly
Laundry or a trapped item stopping the door closing fully onto the catch
Damaged or chafed wiring in the door lock circuit
Rarely, a fault on the main control board

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Open the door, clear any clothing caught around the seal or the latch area, and close it firmly until you hear it click
Look at the pin on the door edge that goes into the lock — if it is visibly cracked, bent or missing, that is your answer
Check the door isn't sagging or catching on the frame as it closes; lifting it very slightly as you push it shut can confirm alignment is the issue
Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power back on and retry a short programme
