Siemens E61 washing machine: what it means & what to check

What E61 actually means

The machine can't confirm the door is locked shut, so it won't start or fill.

On Bosch-built machines — which includes Siemens — E61 sits in the same family as E01, F08, F16 and F34, and they all point at the door interlock. The machine energises the lock at the start of a cycle and waits for the lock to report back that it's engaged; if that confirmation doesn't arrive it abandons the cycle rather than filling with water behind a door it can't trust. You'll usually see it within seconds of pressing Start, sometimes with the door still openable.

What E61 looks like on a Siemens washing machine

What usually causes it

Failed door interlock (the most common finding by a long way)
Laundry or a stray item caught between the door and the seal, stopping it closing fully
Worn or dropped door catch so the door isn't quite pulling up tight
Broken wire or loose connection in the loom feeding the lock
Control board fault — much rarer, and often wrongly blamed before the lock is checked

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Open the door, clear the rubber seal all round and check nothing is trapped in it, then close the door firmly until you hear it latch
Redistribute the load — an overloaded drum can push washing against the door
Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power up and try a short cycle
Check the door isn't dropping or catching on the frame as you close it
