What E21 actually means
The main wash pump that pushes water up to the spray arms is jammed or can't move water properly, so the machine has halted rather than run a wash with no spray.
The circulation pump is the motor that drives water round the machine and up through the spray arms. On Siemens dishwashers, E21 is raised when the control board sees that pump obstructed — something is trapped between the motor and the pump housing, or debris is restricting the flow of water. Rather than keep driving a blocked pump, the machine stops the cycle.
What E21 looks like on a Siemens dishwasher
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Siemens dishwasher, E21 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Dishwasher door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- Dishwasher not draining
- Water left in the tub at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Broken glass, fruit stones, olive pits or similar caught in the pump
- A clogged or badly fitted mesh filter letting debris straight through to the pump
- Food and grease build-up restricting water flow around the sump
- Foreign objects such as cocktail sticks or bits of packaging drawn in
- A worn or seized circulation pump motor
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Take out the bottom basket, lift out the filter assembly and wash it thoroughly under a hot tap — including the fine mesh, not only the coarse cup
- Look into the empty sump for anything obvious sitting on the surface, such as glass fragments or a stone, and lift it out by hand (carefully, in case of sharp edges)
- Refit the filter properly — it should twist and lock, not sit loose
- Check the spray arms spin freely and their holes aren't blocked
- Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power up and run a short programme to see if the code returns

Can I fix Siemens E21 myself?
There are 5 checks you can safely do yourself first.
- Take out the bottom basket, lift out the filter assembly and wash it thoroughly under a hot tap — including the fine mesh, not only the coarse cup.
- Look into the empty sump for anything obvious sitting on the surface, such as glass fragments or a stone, and lift it out by hand (carefully, in case of sharp edges).
- Refit the filter properly — it should twist and lock, not sit loose.
- Check the spray arms spin freely and their holes aren't blocked.
- Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power up and run a short programme to see if the code returns.
This sometimes clears with those checks. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly.
