What E24 actually means
The water isn't leaving the machine fast enough, so the dishwasher has stopped and flagged a drain problem.
Siemens dishwashers monitor how quickly the water level drops when the drain pump runs. If the water isn't going away at the rate expected, the cycle halts with E24 and you'll usually find dirty water sitting in the bottom of the tub. On most of the machines we attend it's a restriction in the drain path rather than a dead pump — the filters at the base of the tub are the first suspect.
What E24 looks like on a Siemens dishwasher
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Siemens dishwasher, E24 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Dishwasher not draining
- Water left in the tub at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
- Standing water in the bottom
- Not filling with water
- No water going in
- Takes for ever to fill
- Stops right at the start of the cycle

What usually causes it
- Blocked or clogged filters in the bottom of the tub
- Food debris, a fragment of glass or a fruit stone caught in the drain pump
- Kinked, trapped or blocked drain hose
- Drain hose pushed too far into the waste pipe, or a blocked sink trap/spigot
- Failed drain pump (less common than a blockage)
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Lift out the filter assembly at the bottom of the tub, rinse it under the tap and clear anything caught in the mesh, then refit it properly so it locks in place.
- Scoop out any standing water so you can see the sump area, and remove visible debris by hand — labels, bits of food, broken glass (use care).
- Check the drain hose at the back isn't kinked, squashed against the wall or trapped by the machine.
- If it drains into a sink waste or standpipe, check that isn't blocked — a slow-draining sink often explains it.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, switch back on and run a short cycle to see if the code returns.
