What C05 actually means
C05 isn't a breakdown code — it's the last step of the engineer's built-in test routine, where the machine cuts power to the motor, lets the drum brake to a stop, releases the door and shuts itself down.
The C-codes on Whirlpool Zen machines are test steps, not faults: C03 runs the pumps, C04 checks drum balance and motor speed, and C05 ends the sequence by stopping the motor, unlocking the door and powering down the control board. If you are seeing it on the display, the machine has been put into service test mode rather than a normal wash — usually by a button combination held at switch-on, sometimes accidentally. At the end of this step the machine looks for any door-lock related codes it has stored (F13 and F29 FdL); if one of those appears instead of a clean shutdown, that is the real fault to chase.
What C05 looks like on a Whirlpool washing machine

What usually causes it
- The machine has been put into the engineer's test mode, deliberately or by accident, and is running through its checks
- A test sequence was left part-finished, so the display is still sitting on the final step
- A door lock or interlock problem showing up as F13 or F29 FdL at the end of the test
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch it back on — it should come up in normal programme mode
- Once the drum has fully stopped, open and close the door firmly so the catch engages properly, then select a normal wash
- Try a short cycle and see whether the machine runs and locks the door as it should
