What E61 actually means
The machine has not reached the temperature it expects within the time allowed, so it has stopped the cycle rather than carry on cold.
On these Zanussi boards E61 means insufficient heating — the control has been calling for heat, watching the temperature sensor, and the reading has not climbed far enough before the maximum time ran out. Rather than run a wash or dry that would never come up to temperature, the board pauses the cycle and flags the fault. It is a heating-circuit complaint, not a drum, drain or door problem.
What E61 looks like on a Zanussi washer dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Zanussi washer dryer, E61 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- Machine not draining
- Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Failed heating element in the wash or dry circuit
- The temperature sensor (NTC) out of position or reading wrongly
- Damaged or disconnected wiring to the heater
- Control board fault in the heating circuit
- Airflow so restricted on the drying side that the temperature never behaves as expected
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Clean the fluff/lint filter and, if your model has one, the condenser filter behind the lower flap — heavy blockage upsets drying temperatures
- Check the drain hose and any vent hose are not kinked or trapped behind the machine
- Try a smaller load; an overpacked drum slows heating right down
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power up and restart the programme to see whether the code returns straight away
