What is actually happening
A leak from the door front is normally the door seal or an over-foaming detergent problem. A leak from underneath is more serious, because the base tray holds a float that will lock the machine out — so a machine that both leaks and refuses to start is usually telling you one story, not two.
The usual causes
- A perished or displaced door seal
- Over-foaming from washing-up liquid put in by mistake, which forces suds out of the door
- A leaking hose connection or a failed pump seal under the machine
- A cracked sump or a leaking spray arm feed
- The machine not level, so water pools against the door
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything past this point — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the appliance plugged in.
- Run a rinse cycle and watch where the water first appears — front, side or underneath
- Check the door seal all the way round for splits, grease and trapped debris
- If washing-up liquid has been used by mistake, run several rinse cycles to clear the suds
- Check the machine sits level
