What is actually happening
There are two fans on most built-in ovens and they do different jobs. The one inside circulates heat; the one you can hear running after cooking cools the controls and the surrounding units. If the cooling fan fails the oven will often keep working for a while and then cut out on a thermal trip — so a fan fault and an oven that stops after twenty minutes are frequently the same fault.
The usual causes
- A failed fan motor, or one seized with grease and debris
- A failed cooling fan leading to repeated thermal cut-outs
- A fan blade fouling the back panel and rattling
- A wiring or thermal cut-out fault in the fan circuit
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything past this point — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the appliance plugged in.
- Listen with the oven on: an inner fan should be audible and steady, and the cooling fan should run on after cooking
- Note whether the oven works for a while and then cuts out — that points at cooling rather than the element
- Do not remove the back panel yourself; the element and wiring behind it are live and sharp
