What is actually happening
The grill runs off its own element in the roof of the cavity, on its own circuit, which is why it can fail while the oven itself is perfectly fine. A grill element that has failed is usually visibly damaged — blistered, split or with a bright section — and the fault is nearly always the element or its selector switch rather than anything more involved.
The usual causes
- A failed grill element, often with visible blistering or a split
- A failed function selector switch that never sends power to the grill
- A thermal cut-out tripped in the grill circuit
- Seized mounting screws making replacement awkward — a known job on some cookers
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything past this point — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the appliance plugged in.
- Look at the element in the roof of the oven, cold, for blistering, splits or bright patches
- Check whether the oven itself still heats normally, which rules out the supply
Still grill not working?
Most of these need an engineer once the checks above are done. £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it, or £84 in total including VAT if it is put right on the visit and no parts are needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Common questions
Why is my oven grill not working?
The oven works normally but the grill does not heat.
Can I fix a oven grill not working myself?
Look at the element in the roof of the oven, cold, for blistering, splits or bright patches. Check whether the oven itself still heats normally, which rules out the supply. Beyond those checks this one normally needs an engineer.
How much does it cost to repair a oven grill not working?
