Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E57 actually means

The machine has flagged a fault in the motor circuit / its control electronics and has stopped rather than risk driving the drum.

On these Bosch machines the drum is driven by an inverter motor, and a dedicated control board feeds it. E57 is logged as a motor fault, but in practice the board that drives the motor is usually the part that has failed — commonly a blown component or a burnt track on it. Once the machine sees this, it halts the cycle, often mid-wash with water still in the drum.

What usually causes it

 • Failed inverter/motor control board — by far the most common finding
 • A burnt or cracked track on that board
 • Excessive load on the motor — seized or dragging drum bearings, or a heavily overloaded drum
 • A fault in the motor itself or its wiring (less often)

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

 1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try a short cycle — occasionally the code was a one-off trip.
 2. Try a much smaller load; if the machine only fails on heavy loads, that points to strain on the motor.
 3. Turn the drum by hand with the machine off — if it feels stiff, rumbling or noisy, mention that when you book the repair.
