What E42 actually means
The touch control panel isn't reporting back correctly, so the appliance has shut down its functions rather than run blind.
On these Hisense venting hob models the extraction and the cooking zones are both driven through one touch control panel, and E42 means the electronics have lost confidence in what that panel is telling them. Because a stuck or misread touch key could leave a zone or the fan running when nobody has asked for it, the appliance locks out and shows the code instead. Hisense's own advice is to clean and dry the panel and then cut the power for a minute before assuming the panel itself has failed.
What E42 looks like on a Hisense cooker hood

What usually causes it
- Water, oil or condensation sitting on the touch keys — by far the most common reason we see it
- Something resting on the panel (a cloth, a pan handle, a phone) being read as a permanently pressed key
- Steam from cooking getting behind the glass around the touch area
- A one-off glitch in the control electronics that clears on a power cycle
- A genuinely failed touch control board or its ribbon connection to the main electronics
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Take everything off the glass, including cloths and pans, so nothing is touching the control area.
- Wipe the panel with a damp cloth and then dry it thoroughly — the touch keys will misread while there is any film of water or grease on them.
- Let the appliance cool and any steam clear before trying again.
- Turn the power off at the wall socket or the circuit breaker, wait at least a minute, then restore it and see if the code clears.
