What E04 actually means
The dishwasher has stopped because it cannot get water to the right spray arm — the valve that switches water between the upper and lower sprays isn't doing its job.
HYE dishwashers of this type feed the upper and lower spray arms in turn rather than both at once, and a distribution valve does the switching. When the machine can't confirm that valve has moved as it should, it flags the fault during the wash or rinse stage and abandons the programme. The usual complaint we hear first isn't the code at all — it's that the top rack, or sometimes the bottom, is coming out dirty.
What E04 looks like on a HYE dishwasher
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a HYE dishwasher, E04 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Not filling with water
- No water going in
- Takes for ever to fill
- Stops right at the start of the cycle
- Tub not turning
- Won't spin
- Hums or buzzes but nothing moves
- Turns one way only

What usually causes it
- The water distribution valve itself has failed or has stuck part-way
- The small motor that drives the valve has stopped turning
- A wiring or connection fault between the valve and the control board
- Debris or scale jamming the valve mechanism
- A control board fault misreading the valve's position
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the dishwasher off at the wall for a minute, then switch it back on and start a short programme — a one-off glitch will sometimes clear.
- Take out the filters at the bottom of the tub, rinse them under the tap and refit them properly.
- Check both spray arms spin freely by hand and that the holes aren't blocked with food debris or bits of label.
- Make sure nothing — a tall item, a fallen utensil or an overhanging plate — is jamming a spray arm or blocking water reaching the upper rack.
