What LE actually means
The machine has tried to spin the drum but the motor isn't turning the way the control board expects, so it stops and shows LE.
LG's direct-drive motor has a hall sensor on it that reports drum speed and position back to the control board. If the board asks for rotation and the feedback doesn't match \u2014 or the drum physically can't turn \u2014 it aborts with LE. Owners usually notice the drum jerking side to side or making a short attempt to move before the code appears, often as the machine tries to get up to wash or spin speed.
What usually causes it
- Something jammed between the inner and outer drum, such as a sock or an underwire, stopping the drum turning freely
- A faulty hall sensor on the motor giving wrong or no speed feedback
- Broken or fatigued wiring between the control board and the motor, often where it runs low down in the machine and flexes
- Collapsed drum bearings locking the drum
- Control board fault \u2014 less common, and usually only confirmed after motor and sensor have been checked
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and try a short cycle \u2014 occasionally clears a one-off reading
- With the machine switched off and unplugged, open the door and turn the drum by hand: it should spin freely and quietly. If it grinds, drags or won't move, that's your answer
- Take out any heavy or unbalanced load \u2014 a jammed, tightly packed drum can stall the motor
- Have a feel round the inside of the drum for a trapped item, and check nothing is caught at the front of the door seal
