Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What DE actually means

Your LG washing machine can't confirm the door is shut and locked, so it won't start filling or spinning.

Before any cycle begins, the machine energises the door interlock and waits for confirmation that it has latched. If that confirmation doesn't come back, it stops and shows DE rather than risk running with an unsecured door. LG's own diagnostic test mode checks the door lock as one of its first steps, and a failed lock test brings up this same code.

What usually causes it

  • Door not pushed fully shut, or something caught in the seal stopping it latching
  • Washing pushed against the door so the catch can't engage
  • Worn or broken door interlock (the most common finding by far)
  • Damaged or misaligned door catch/hook on the door itself
  • Wiring or control board fault feeding the interlock

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Open the door and close it again firmly, listening for the click of the latch
  2. Check nothing — a sock, a corner of a duvet, the seal rolled over — is trapped between door and drum
  3. Redistribute the load so it isn't pressing on the glass
  4. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on and retry the cycle

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
