Sharp E04 washing machine: what it means & what to check

What E04 actually means

The machine has found more water in the drum than it should have, so it has stopped the wash and is pumping the excess out to avoid a flood.

Sharp washers run an overflow protection routine that compares the water level in the tub against what the program expects at that point. If the level goes above it, the machine abandons the wash, runs the drain pump and shows this code. The usual cause is water continuing to enter when it shouldn't — typically a water inlet valve that isn't shutting off fully — so the machine keeps draining to hold the level down and protect your floor.

What E04 looks like on a Sharp washing machine

What usually causes it

A water inlet valve that isn't closing properly, so the machine keeps filling
Water siphoning back in through a badly fitted or too-low drain hose
A faulty or blocked pressure/level sensing system misreading the water level
Excess suds from too much detergent confusing the level reading
Control board fault wrongly holding the fill valve open

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and see if the code returns on a fresh cycle.
Turn off the water tap at the wall and see whether the drum keeps filling — if water still trickles in with the tap off, that points at the drain hose siphoning rather than the valve.
Check the drain hose isn't kinked, pushed too far down the standpipe, or hanging lower than the machine.
Clean the pump filter at the bottom front so the machine can drain freely.
If you've been generous with detergent, run an empty rinse and spin with none at all and see whether it completes.
