What E05 actually means
The fridge has lost a sensible reading from the sensor that tells it when to defrost the fridge compartment, so it has flagged a fault and put the display into an error state.
Inside the fridge section there is a small temperature sensor whose only job is to tell the control board when the evaporator has iced up enough to need a defrost, and when the defrost has finished. When the board sees a reading from that sensor that is out of range — usually open circuit or shorted — it stops trusting it and shows this code. The compressor and fan often carry on running, so the fridge may still feel cold, but the automatic defrost cycle is no longer being controlled properly.
What E05 looks like on a Tesla fridge freezer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Tesla fridge freezer, E05 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Fridge freezer door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- Fridge freezer not draining
- Water left in the machine at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water

What usually causes it
- The fridge defrost sensor itself has failed
- A loose or corroded plug on the sensor wiring
- Moisture getting into the sensor connection, often after a heavy ice build-up or a spillage
- A fault on the control board that reads the sensor
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the appliance off at the wall for a minute or two and switch it back on — an occasional glitch will clear and not return
- Check nothing is packed hard against the rear wall inside the fridge, blocking airflow
- Look for a build-up of ice on the back wall of the fridge compartment; if there is a lot, empty the appliance and let it defrost fully with the door open, then restart it
- Note whether the fridge is still holding temperature, and keep an eye on food while you wait for an engineer
