Electrolux E30 washing machine: what it means & what to try

What E30 actually means

The machine can't get a sensible reading of how much water is in the drum, so it stops rather than carry on blind.

On these Electrolux machines the water level isn't measured by a simple float switch — the pressure in a small hydraulic circuit pushes a diaphragm that moves a magnet inside a coil, and the control board reads the resulting change in frequency to work out the level. E30 is flagged from that level-sensing circuit, so the board has either lost the signal or is being given a reading it can't trust. Because the same pressure system also guards the heating element, the machine will normally refuse to fill, heat or move on through the cycle until it gets a believable reading.

What usually causes it

The thin pressure hose to the sensor blocked with detergent sludge, kinked or pushed off its spigot
Water still sitting in the drum from a poor drain, so the sensor never sees an empty tub
A faulty level sensor (pressure switch) or its wiring plug
Fault on the main control board reading the sensor signal

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on — if the reading was a one-off glitch it may clear
Check the drum isn't still holding water; if it is, clean the pump filter at the front (with the machine switched off) and empty it via the drain hose
Make sure the drain hose isn't kinked, pushed too far into the standpipe or sitting in a blocked trap
Run a short empty cycle to see whether the code returns at the same point every time — that's useful information for whoever attends
